Westboro is open!

Well, hello Westboro. In early December, Equator Coffee Roasters set up shop in Ottawa's chic west-end neighbourhood, Westboro...and brought a little bit of Almonte with it. Located on Churchill Avenue, in a renovated storefront known most recently as former offices of an IT company - and before that, a furniture retail store - our new coffee bar features espresso-based drinks, drip coffees, loose-leaf teas, treats of the glutenous and gluten-free variety, and hearty sandwiches made right on the spot. Piccolo, flat white, macchiato, americano, or the classic cappuccino, there are lots of drinks to choose from and learn about. Our goal is to bring Equator's best - from coffee to service - and treat Ottawa to one (or more!) of the many longstanding treasures of Almonte.

The focus of the new shop is, simply put, coffee. We felt it was time to step up our game in Ottawa and set the tone for brewing and serving higher quality, better tasting coffee. It’s the same Equator Coffee it’s always been: specialty organic coffee sourced by our coffee-buying roaster cooperative directly (and fairly) from producer co-ops - and roasted on our vintage Probat in Almonte. Our smaller (and perhaps less familiar to regulars of other cafes) cup sizes are intentional: we want people to see that if the coffee's roasted fresh and brewed properly, it doesn't need to be drowned in 16 ounces of milk. In fact, coffee should taste good with or without milk. Though you may prefer it with dairy (or soy, almond, or lactose-free milk, all available at Equator!), it shouldn't wrinkle your tongue if you drink it black. Teaching and learning about coffee are part of the purpose of the new space - stay tuned for courses on quality, freshness, brewing, and if you’re up for it, pulling the perfect shot. At the end of the day, we certainly won't argue that a sweet ooey-gooey bar or rocky road brownie doesn't help bring out the full flavour of a good afternoon cappuccino.

While sipping on a delicious coffee, some people may want more than a scrumptious baked treat.

For customers looking for a quick but filling lunch, our homemade sandwiches will satisfy any craving for savoury goodness. Local suppliers provide us with fantastic and fresh ingredients: meat from Piggy Market, bread from Nat's Bread Company, milk from Cochrane's Dairy, baked goods (gluten) from Hearty Bakery, and gluten-free, vegan treats from Almonte's own, SweetCheeks. If you need a bag of beans for brewing our coffee at home, choose from a variety of our classic blends, seasonal roasts, or single origins.

Staff welcome customers with warm smiles and lots of helpful knowledge about all the different products. So come check us out and try whatever suits your fancy. It's time you enjoyed a good coffee.

About our roasting company: Equator started roasting in 1998 on a 10kg Toper roaster in Arnprior. Since then, we've moved twice (now in Almonte!), upgraded roasters twice (now on a 90kg Probat!), and opened a second location (Westboro coffee bar!). Founders Craig and Amber Hall built the company on their deep commitment to sourcing high quality specialty coffee, direct from small-scale producer cooperatives. Equator roasts fresh each and every week, delivering to cafes, restaurants, and retailers of all different shapes and sizes in the Ottawa area.
