Join our SchoolBOX + Equator 2017 build!
You are invited to join a team of enthusiastic Equator Coffee employees, customers, and friends on a 10-day trip to Nicaragua to construct Equator’s third classroom with SchoolBOX! The classroom we will be building is at El Porvenir School, located in the well-known Nicaraguan coffee region of Matagalpa. Children whose parents are employed in the coffee industry make up the majority of students at El Porvenir. Currently, the school is so overcrowded that the Kindergarten students share one room with the grade 4, 5 & 6 students, separated only by a plastic tarp as a wall. The noise and crowded conditions make it a very difficult learning environment for these students. Despite considerable challenges, the students are extremely eager to learn and the community is willing to dedicate their own time and effort to helping SchoolBOX with the construction of this much-needed classroom. You can learn more about El Porvenir School by clicking here.
In addition to building a new classroom at El Porvenir, we will visit Equator’s other two completed classrooms in Nicaragua. We will also pay a visit to a fair trade and organic coffee farm. Equator is working with our partners at Cooperative Coffees, the supplier of all of our green beans, to visit one of their co-ops and get a glimpse into life as a coffee farmer in Nicaragua. Our trip is taking place in November to coincide with the coffee harvest season in Nicaragua. Coffee cherries will be ripening all around us as we work on the new school and take-in the beauty of this region!
This is a fantastic chance to have fun, learn about coffee farming practices in Nicaragua, and empower children to get an education! You can get a taste of what building a classroom with SchoolBOX looks like by reading our blog posts here and here.
