Our Goal:

To gain 2% of the Ontario Coffee market by 2008.

Our Story:

The Guy Behind the Coffee Roaster...

Equator Coffee Roasters was formed in 1998 out of Craig Hall's strong desire to provide fair trade products to Ontario consumers. As a graduate of Trent University's Comparative Development program, Craig learned about fair trade commodities and the significance that this partnership could have on developing economies.

Why Fair Trade?...

Fair trade coffee provides three times the income to small scale farmers than they would receive on the open market. Transfair Canada provides a vehicle to truly impact the lives of small coffee farmers in developing countries. Equator Coffee has a license agreement with Transfair Canada and has been a member of Transfair since 1998. Transfair International works directly with coffee co-operatives to ensure that they are legitimate and receive the fair price they deserve.

Taste the Difference...

Coffee is not just a morning ritual that tastes the same whether it has sat in the freezer for two years, or is freshly roasted. Good coffee tastes better if it is freshly roasted. Equator is addicted to providing a superior product. Equator coffee is superior in quality, freshness and responsibility - environmentally and socially. All of our coffee is high quality Arabica and we are committed to organic practices which protect the environment and animal species. Fair trade coffees are literally hand-picked by small farmers; they are all organic, shade grown, and bird and rainforest friendly. Equator Coffee Roasters has chosen to separate itself from other specialty coffee roasters by using only certified fair trade and organic coffees.

The Equator Family:

You should get acquainted with us because, in our opinion, relationships are very important.

Craig Hall

Craig Hall (craig@equator.ca)
On a typical day, you'll find Craig Hall roasting in Almonte, Ontario, in the heart of the Ottawa Valley. Craig loves his family, golfing, coffee, new entrepreneurial ideas, and canoeing. So...if you're handy with a lathe, feel free to pay him in canoe paddles!

Amber Hall

Amber Hall (amber@equator.ca)
Where would Craig be without Amber? It's a question most of us shudder to think about! This amazing wife of his raises three beautiful children, all the while making sure the inventory tracking, accounting, and all other administrative feats of wonder are accomplished. She also makes fabulous home-made bread, a killer iced coffee, sings like an angel, and beats the pants off anyone who tries to challenge her to a board game.

Shirley Robitaille
Shirley has the most sought after job of caring for the Equator children. Joel, Sam and Ella are delighted to play with Shirley whenever mom is at work. We are very blessed to have someone with so much experience with kids who loves them like they are her own.

Joel, Sam & Ella Hall

Joel, Sam & Ella Hall
Joel is five and will enjoy the occasional cup of java when it is thoroughly doused in milk, but two-year-old Sam still prefers a long drink of apple-juice to tongue-burning coffee. One-year-old Ella is happy to eat whole coffee beans off the floor if she can get her hands on them. The kids’ main job is to make Dad and Mom take a break from coffee and enjoy the finer things in life, like wrestling, nap-time, and diaper changes.

We have GREAT Volunteers!

Jeff Stott

Jeff Stott
Jeff has been our longest running volunteer and has been with us from the very beginning. He keeps us all laughing with his great sense of humour and he makes the awesome wood puzzles that you find in our café. Jeff is always coming up with great ideas to get us more organized in production and for that, we are very thankful.

Legend has it that coffee was discovered by an Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi when his goats became excited after eating coffee cherries.
