Home roasting is the most magical way to enjoy coffee. If you have never tried fresh coffee, you will not understand what this experience is all about. If you think freshly BREWED coffee is the same as freshly ROASTED coffee, you're sadly mistaken.

Roasting coffee at home allows you to experience coffee like you have never had it before. If you love coffee, you will LOVE this!

Coffee tastes and smells amazing when it is fresh. Coffee should be consumed within four or five days of roasting, or you just are not getting the same experience. If you roast at home, you can have the ultimate coffee experience every day. Green coffee is very stable and durable, but as soon as it is roasted, it becomes a very fragile product. An example of a similar product is bread - fresh bread is awesome but it is only fresh for a short period of time. Coffee is just the same.

Roast coffee in your oven
To roast coffee in a conventional electric oven you will need a glass or clay baking dish and your favorite green coffee. Heat the oven to 425-450 degrees F. For medium roasts, use the lower temperature and for dark roasts, the higher one. Spread the green coffee one layer deep across the pan; using your hand to pat the beans is a good strategy to make them even. Place the pan on the middle shelf. It is recommended to place a cookie sheet on the bottom shelf of the oven to help move the heat around the oven and roast more evenly. Stir the beans once to encourage even roasting. A medium roast in this method should take about 15 minutes and a dark roast about 20 minutes. When you have heard the first crack (this occurs about 7 to 10 minutes in as the outer chaff of the coffee breaks as the bean expands), wait and watch carefully (every minute) to match your desired degree of roast. This of course is science, so keep notes and change variables to improve your roasting.
